As a Clinical Psychologist I provide clinical and psychotherapy services to adolescents (16+) and adults in private practice, and consulting services at the University of Cape Town's Department of Psychiatry and Mental Health. In addition to my clinical and consulting services I also consult to private corporate clients.

PROFESSIONAL INTERESTS

My clinical interests include assisting individuals who are experiencing:

  • trauma or loss;
  • anxiety or stress related difficulties;
  • mood difficulties, including low mood and depression, irritability or anger, and fluctuating moods that may be difficult to manage;
  • relationship difficulties, particularly in the context of personal, family or work relationships;
  • difficulty coping where a significant other such as a partner, parent, child, or sibling suffers from psychological difficulties or psychiatric illness.

I also have an interest in the psychological dynamics within corporate environments and consult to individuals and private corporate clients in the area of psychological literacy.

HOW I WORK

I practice psychotherapy primarily from what is called an integrative psychodynamic framework. This approach aims to resolve and prevent specific personal difficulties by developing a collaborative working relationship that facilitates an understanding of how particular thoughts, feelings, and behaviors contribute towards specific personal difficulties (or other more substantial psychological or psychiatric challenges).

Although I practice from a integrated psychodynamic framework, I may augment my practice with more directive non-dynamic practices after considering an individuals' specific circumstances and goals.

WHAT TO EXPECT

Clients and patients can expect to meet once a week for 45 minutes, at a dedicated regular time. During the first few sessions I will usually complete a formal (clinical) assessment - which assists in identifying personal difficulties as well as specific goals that clients and patients may wish to achieve.

Most people find a 3 - 9 month psychodynamic inquiry sufficient to reflect on and address their initial difficulties, although many individuals decide to further enhance their personal functioning by continuing with a more substantive psychodynamic inquiry.

ABOUT ME

I completed my academic training as a clinical psychologist through the University of Stellenbosch where I completed a BSc (Honours) (Psychology) and an MSc (Clinical Psychology).

After my academic training I spent 2 years working at different state hospitals. This included the acute male admission and forensic units at Valkenberg Psychiatric Hospital, and out-patient and in-patient wards at Groote Schuur Hospital. During my public service year I established and managed the clinical psychology and mental health services unit at Abraham Esau District Hospital and various Community Health Centres in the southern Karoo region.

I am registered with the following professional organisations:

  • The Health Professions Council of South Africa;
  • The Board of Healthcare Funders;
  • Psychological Society of South Africa;
  • Cape Town Psychoanalytic Self Psychology Group;
  • Centre for Group Analytic Studies;
  • Family Mediators Association of the Cape.
