Counselling psychologists treat people dealing with normal life challenges, such as the loss of a job or divorce. They hold Master’s Degrees in Counselling Psychology and are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
I work from a predominantly Narrative approach, meaning that I tend to understand that a person’s perspective of their world has meaning and is expressed in the stories they tell of their lives. Psychotherapy allows a person to tell their unique story in safe and non-judgmental environment. The aim of this story telling is to allow for the client to re-author this story with a different and hopefully better outcome.
I do believe that all our past experiences contribute to the meanings that we make of our world in the present. Past successes and traumas can leave impressions on our self-concept, which we carry from childhood into our adult lives. However, no matter what the past holds, it is how we think, feel and act in the present that is important. The past can be thought of like the dictionary that helps us to interpret the present
