Counselling psychologists treat people dealing with normal life challenges, such as the loss of a job or divorce. They hold Master’s Degrees in Counselling Psychology and are registered with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.
My background is quite varied. From journalist to primary school teacher to drama teacher in the years between 1997 and 2005, I have had an opportunity to share in the stories of others, to engage with children in a learning environment, and to use creativity and drama to bring out the inner artist that exists in all of us.
In 2006 I began working at a care centre for children and young adolescents with severe to profound brain injury. While my primary role was to design an educational and stimulating programme for the children, interacting with these young people and their parents engaged me on every level and I became the learner as well as the educator. During this period I also co-ran an arts therapy group for children and adolescents with Down's Syndrome. I count myself as so fortunate to have had these opportunities to prepare me for my work as a therapist.
During my Psychology internship, I worked in a private psychiatric hospital running group therapy, psychoeducation groups, relaxation groups, and working with a range of adults with difficulties including depression, anxiety, trauma, abuse, and addiction. Following this I worked with a tertiary student population focusing on issues such as study skills, wellness, emotional and adjustment difficulties, existential crises, family issues, as well as depression, anxiety, trauma and abuse.
As a university lecturer at NMMU I lectured and trained student and intern psychologists at a Masters level in the areas of case management, therapy for all age groups, report writing, assessment, neuropsychology, and group therapy.
Today I work full time in private practice, and with all age groups and people of all levels of functioning. The individuals and groups that I work with come from a variety of backgrounds, both economically advantaged and disadvantaged. My specialities include:
