At The Family Corner, we believe that awareness and an understanding (self-knowledge) of what one’s experiences mean, can bring us closer to transformation. Understanding, in terms of the way we think, feel and act can better our relationships within the context of our marriage, family, friends, work and community.
We have a strong emphasis on families, for within our families we discover who we are, we develop and change and we give and receive the support we need for survival. We learn to negotiate, accommodate and experiment change within the system.
We believe that there is a broader context that shape the stories of our lives, that influences the interpretations and meaning we give to our lives and experiences - our historical and current socio-economic, political, institutional and technological context shape our choices, perceptions and viewpoints.
We believe that trauma whether internal/external, expected or unexpected is part of life. Each one of us experiences trauma at some stage in life. The way we deal with trauma may depend on: our personality, our socialisation process, the nature of the stress/trauma, the meaning conveyed by it, its strength, the vulnerability of a person at a specific time in life (critical developmental stages), religious beliefs and possible outcome (self-actualisation).
Spiritual guidance at the centre entails; listening to people’s narratives, creating space for people to construct meaning in their journey through pain, guiding in mapping alternative faith narratives of relationships with God and others and co-create the journey of suffering as a source of growth.
