Registered counsellors perform basic counselling for people who are looking to improve their personal functioning. They can also assess to see if a client need more in depth psychological treatment and refer them to the appropriate practitioner. Registered councillors hold honours degrees in psychology.
I hold a BA Psych Hons (UJ) as well as a BPsych (MGI). My training and internship included but was not limited to working with children and adolescents at Weskoppies, Teddy Bear Clinic, Headway (NPO for individuals who have acquired brain injury) as well as Trauma debriefing and counselling at the Midrand Police Station Victim Empowerment Unit. I have also done extensive additional volunteer work at Headway running group sessions, doing individual face to face and telephonic counselling for attendees and their families. I thoroughly enjoy ongoing training in my field to continuously build on my knowledge and experience as well as to keep abreast of new research, findings and methods.
I am a registered counsellor in Somerset West. My work includes working with children and adults, groups and individuals as well as corporate companies and schools.
I hold the view that we are all unique and experience the world differently in our own special way. Counselling provides a safe, confidential, warm and nurturing environment for each person to be heard and understood in a non judgmental way. At some point in our lives we will all struggle with a significant issue/s or trauma. Counselling offers the opportunity for each person to regain a sense of balance, understand their thoughts, feelings and behaviour, increase self-esteem, self-awareness and improve insight into their own unique experience of the world so that personal growth and informed decision making is also improved.“As I believe that we are all unique, I do not use only one approach or method in counselling but rather an eclectic approach. This means that sessions may differ depending on the person/group as well as the main issue at hand”. Janine Giannini
