Registered counsellors perform basic counselling for people who are looking to improve their personal functioning. They can also assess to see if a client need more in depth psychological treatment and refer them to the appropriate practitioner. Registered councillors hold honours degrees in psychology.
I come from a more Cognitve Behavioural approach, where each individual is responsible for their journey and path in life. My approach is action-oriented, allowing clients the space and opportunity to become aware of inaccurate or negative thinking and making the relevant changes. Through self-awareness one is able to view challenging situations more clearly and therefore able to respond in a more effective and responsible way. The focus becomes about understanding, acceptance, taking responsibility and moving forward – enabling the client to feel more in control and confident about themselves and their environment. Counselling provides a safe, confidential and nonthreatening space to explore alternative and healthier means of realising one’s optimal self. Counselling is helpful with individuals who have concerns regarding anxiety, depression, trauma, co-dependency, unhealthy relationships, parenting and boundaries.
Neurofeedback/Brain Training works at addressing problems at a neural level. It allows one to change previous negative thought patterns and behaviours by making use of more optimal ways of thinking/being.
Neurofeedback is often used to help with scholastic difficulties or those kids being diagnosed with ADD/ADHD that may not respond well to drugs, don’t want to increase their dosage or who have undesirable side effects as a result.
