Registered counsellors perform basic counselling for people who are looking to improve their personal functioning. They can also assess to see if a client need more in depth psychological treatment and refer them to the appropriate practitioner. Registered councillors hold honours degrees in psychology.
Lizette Smith is a member of the counselling team at Recovery Direct. Recovery Direct is a private drug rehabilitation and trauma recovery centre based in Cape Town. Lizette’s has a number of years in experience working primarily with addiction and trauma.
She has a Bachelor’s Degree in Applied Social Sciences and a Diploma in Counselling and Communication from The South African College of Applied Psychology. Having experienced late onset blindness, she offers a unique perspective on how people process traumatic experiences and loss.
She is passionate about people and helping others heal while providing a safe space where past trauma can be addressed. In addition to her counselling she is also trained in Aroma Therapy, Shiatsu and is an Equine Therapist.
Her work at various NGO’s has provided her with a sound understanding of case management, group facilitation, individual counselling and family support. Her special area of focus lies in dealing with substance abuse.
She works from the premise that each induvial has a unique understanding and experience of their world. Lizette’s goal is to provide a non-judgemental approach to self-discovery, especially those suffering from substance related disorders.
