I am a recently established Registered Counsellor operating in private practice from the Centre for Play and Innovation, based in Port Elizabeth. Myself, together with the Centre, value the holistic development of individuals and families. I have interests in Career Development and Guidance, Individual/ Group Solution-focused Counselling and Childhood/ Adolescent Development.
A Registered Counsellor makes psychological services more accessible to the diverse South African population and provides psychological and preventative interventions which focus on support while promoting the enhancement of well-being in community contexts. These services are provided for individuals, families, groups as well as whole communities.
The services provided by a Registered Counsellor are time-limited at a primary, preventative level that include screening and engaging in early and appropriate levels of interventions according to client, group or community needs. Registered Counsellors can be regarded as the “first line” of psychological support and are often referred to as “emotional paramedics”, who identify, address and contain a need until such has either been appropriately resolved or referred to relevant professionals.
Interventions/services that Registered Counsellors provide at a primary mental health level include:
Within the provision of these services, Registered Counsellors are specifically trained to identify any symptoms that require secondary or more in-depth intervention by a Psychologist or other appropriate professionals.
