Social workers work with individuals, as well as families and communities, to develop treatment plans for people with mental health problems. They may work either in private practice or in collaboration with other healthcare professions. They hold Bachelor’s of Arts Degrees and are registered with the South African Council for Service Professions.
My name is Kim Abrahams, I am a Child and Family Therapist and Internationally Registered Social Worker. For the past 11 years I have been practicing social work with children and families in England and my practice is now based in Cape Town. This exposure has enabled me to provide a range of support and counselling services to children, parents and caregivers of diverse personalities, cultures, ethnicities, and backgrounds. I specialise in working therapeutically with children and families, as well as serving as an expert witness for the Family Courts.
My therapeutic approach primarily incorporates play therapy and elements of cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) in treating children. I am experienced in treating trauma, abuse, bereavement and family separation. I enjoy working in a multi-disciplinary manner and collaborate closely with local schools, welfare organisations and NGO's.
Part of my practice also focuses on forensic social work whereby I serve as an expert witness for the Family Courts. This may include providing assessments for care and contact disputes, relocation assessments and assessing allegations of child abuse.
I provide a professional therapeutic environment which is welcoming and non-judgemental. One of the key aspects I maintain in my practice is for children to feel safe in their therapeutic journey and I aim to always work inclusively with families.
