Tucked away in the historic suburb of Sophiatown, Phoenix House Addiction Rehabilitation Centre offers intensive in-patient treatment for drug and alcohol dependence.

With a heritage dating back to 1973, Phoenix House has a longstanding reputation for their effective work with addicts and alcoholics, and have had a significant impact on the many lives of patients and their families.

Previously part of SANCA (a non-profit organisation), Phoenix House was sold in December 2015. Its authentic 1933 building was upgraded and refurbished and as of January 2016, Phoenix House began operating as a private rehabilitation centre. The renovated in-patient facilities offer a pleasant, comfortable yet structured, disciplined and therapeutic environment for people seeking recovery. Although only 30 minutes from the Sandton CBD, its secluded location supports the anonymity of patients. Building on the foundation of its established legacy, Phoenix House has treatment programmes of varying lengths based on the Minnesota Model of Care1 which integrates the profound wisdom of the 12 Step Programme of recovery, one of the most effective grass roots movements of the last century, with the continuous educational and technical advances of a multidisciplinary team of professionals.

The programme consists of intensive therapy, including participation in groups and one-on-one sessions with our addiction counsellors and social workers, as well as educational groups and aftercare sessions. Motivation for change is a significant factor for successful treatment and we believe that the 12 Step approach offers the greatest opportunity for recovery.

Our trained and accredited addiction counsellors, themselves long-term recovering addicts and alcoholics, are able to connect with patients because of their shared experience. In turn, patients learn to trust their counsellors because they are able to relate to them and see that recovery is possible by following their example. Aftercare is essential to maintain sobriety after discharge. Patients are strongly encouraged to attend 12 Step Programme meetings such as Narcotics Anonymous (NA) and Alcoholics Anonymous (AA).

Offering support and advice to the loved ones of addicts and alcoholics is an important part of the recovery process. ToughLove runs a support group every Wednesday night at 7pm at Phoenix House. Admissions to Phoenix House can be made 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, and we offer intervention services to help addicts/alcoholics admit their substance abuse problem and agree to undergo treatment. We are contracted into most medical aid schemes and although private, Phoenix House is committed to offering affordable treatment. We are willing to negotiate flexible payment options where required.
